Description: 10 kan, formerly in 10 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. 29 x 20.6 cm. Fukurotoji. Movable type. Printing frame 22 x 17.5-17.8 cm. Double-line borders all round. Vertical rules between columns. Fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text with manuscript kunten and kaeriten added in black ink. 10 lines to page, 19 characters to line. Original vermilion front cover of satsu 1 only. No title slip. Manuscript gedai: Sōji kōgi 1 莊子口義一. Title from naidai. Hashiragaki: Sōji maki 1 (etc.) 莊子巻一 (等) + folio no. Edition: Belongs to the later of the two kokatsuji editions. The earlier edition, 7 lines to page, naidai 句解南華眞經, is dated by Kokatsujiban no kenkyū to Keichō period (1596-1615), and the present edition to Keichō / Genna (1596-1624), but a Kan'ei date is perhaps more likely. Contents: Explanatory lectures on the book of Zhuangzi 莊子, also known by the title Nanhuazhen-jing 南華眞經 (Jpn. Nankashin-kyō). Maki 10 is followed by an endnote (後序) and by an 18-folio appendix entitled Shinten sōji jūron 新添莊子十論.

- 1 volume Condition: Excellent. Worm damage negligible, confined to margins and inner (binding) edge. Impression: Some evidence of type wear, but for the most part sharp and clear. Seals of ownership: None. Manuscript notes: 2 folios of newer paper at head of text proper, 8 lines to page, containing an explanation of the origin of the work's two titles. Extensive textual headnotes and footnotes throughout text, some written in early-Edo period; some, including longer notes on folios inserted at the end of maki 1, 2 and 3, dating from mid- to late-Edo period. Manuscript kutōten and shubiki in red, and kunten in black, added soon after publication of the work.
