Sutcliffe was born at Slatter Inge near Hebden Bridge on 15 March 1824 and was apprenticed to a general practitioner in Mytholmroyd [?John Uttley Sutcliffe]. He studied medicine at MRI and the Royal School of Medicine in Manchester. He was a general practitioner and certifying factory surgeon in Stalybridge for many years, assisted by his son John Sutcliffe (see above) in the early 1870s. Sutcliffe retired from his practice in 1875 and was succeeded by his son, Crossley Sutcliffe, but continued his work as a certifying factory surgeon until he was succeeded by John Sutcliffe in 1891. Sutcliffe died in 1892. Two of his four sons were doctors, and his daughter married a doctor.
