Simmons was a consultant surgeonat MRI. He was born on 17 February 1903 and was educated at Manchester Grammar School and at the University of Manchester. After gaining a BSc in physiology in 1926, Simmons held resident appointments at MRI, Christie Hospital and St Mark's Hospital London. He then held surgical appointments at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Hope Hospital Salford. Simmons was Hunterian Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1935, working on the sympathetic nervous system. He served in the RAMC, becoming consultant surgeon to the Eastern Command, India. After serving as chief assistant to Professor Telford and research fellow in the department of sympathetic disorders, Simmons was appointed consultant to MRI in 1947. Simmons was also honorary surgeon to Christie Hospital and consultant surgeon to Withington Hospital. He was a lecturer in surgical applied anatomy at the University of Manchester from 1937. Simmons was president of Manchester Medical Society in 1961 and was an active member of the Association of Surgeons and the Surgical Travellers Club. He married Eileen Mary Hughes in 1936 (see MMC/2/SimmonsE), who survived him when he died in 1972.
