Shaw attended Owens College and held junior appointments at Sheffield Royal Hospital. He later settled in general practice in Leigh, Lancashire, where he was honorary surgeon to the Leigh Infirmary and ophthalmic surgeon to the School Clinics. Shaw was also medical referee for a number of assurance companies. He was a fellow of the Royal Institute for Public Health.
