Thompson was born in Oldham on 26 June 1926 and was educated at Manchester Grammar School and the Universities of Cambridge and London. He held junior hospital appointments in London and Liverpool, before being appointed consultant physician to Manchester Regional Health Board in 1965. Thompson was a member of the Liverpool Medical Institution and the British Diabetic Association. He was later honorary consultant surgeon to Wythenshawe Hospital. He was a member of MMS.
