Stocks, of Huddersfield, studied medicine at the Royal School of Medicine in Manchester. He won a number of prizes and scholarships, when he was a gold medallist was instead awarded a microscope. He was later superintendent of dissection at the School. In March 1854, Stocks was appointed surgeon to Salford and Pendleton Royal Hospital and surgeon to Salford Police. Stocks was president of the Manchester Pathological and Medical Societies. He joined the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society in 1900. He retired to Cheadle and died on 14 May 1910.
