Smith gained his medical education at Manchester and was also a graduate of the University of Durham. He was a general practitioner in Manchester, first in Gorton and later in Eccles, where he became medical inspector of factories and one of the first elected members of the Eccles Town Council. Smith was a member of Manchester Medical Society and of the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society from 1887. Smith died in 1897.
