Administrative / Biographical History

MA, MB BChir Camb 1954, MD 1963; MRCS LRCP 1956; FRCPath 1977.

Senior lecturer in clinical bacteriology at the University of Manchester and consultant bacteriologist at MRI. Also dean of Postgraduate Medical Education for the University of Manchester and North West Regional Health Authority from 1979. He had previously served as a captain in the RAMC and was pathologist at Tidworth Military Hospital and Middlesex Hospital, London. Stirland was a member of Manchester Medical Society and the Association of Clinical Pathologists. Stirland died of cancer on 7 July 2002. He left a collection of papers relating to public health in Manchester to the JRUL (Stirland Public Health Collection).
