Schnieden gained his medical education at Bristol University and was clinical pathologist in the RAF until 1951. Schnieden was engaged in pharmacological research at Bristol and for the Colonial Medical Research Council in Uganda. In 1955 Schnieden was appointed lecturer in physiology at University College, Ibadan, and was later lecturer then and senior lecturer in charge of pharmacology. He was senior lecturer in pharmacology at the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases and then at the University of Aberdeen before being appointed Leech Professor of Pharmacology, Materia Medica and Therapeutics at the University of Manchester in 1964. Schnieden was a member of the British Pharmacological Society. His main research interests were clinical pharmacology and the distribution and function of monoamines in the nervous system.
