White was the son of a general practitioner in Wigan. He studied at Edinburgh University and University College London. In 1885 he became honorary physician at Wigan Infirmary. A dermatologist, he set up a skin department at the Infirmary and was also a certifying factory surgeon for the local area. He was a noted expert on occupational skin diseases. White held many offices including president of the London Dermatological Society and of the Certifying Factory Surgeons' Association; he was also president of Manchester Medical Society. His monograph Occupational Affections of the Skin became the standard work on the subject, and he published numerous articles on his special subject.
