MB ChB St Andrews 1940.

Smith was born in Dundee on 20 July 1917 and gained his medical education at St Andrew's. He held junior appointments at North Riding Infirmary and St Mary's Hospital Manchester before serving in the RAMC from 1941 to 1946. Smith then worked as a general practitioner in Levenshulme from 1946 to 1963. He retired from general practice and became school medical officer to Manchester School Health Service. He was also closely involved in the St John's Ambulance Association and Stockport and District Disablement Advisory Committee. In the early 1970s, Smith was examiner in professional studies for the teacher's certificate in the the University of Manchester School of Education. Smith was a member of Manchester Medical Society.
