Administrative / Biographical History

Whitfield was a medical graduate of Queen's University, Belfast. He served with the RAMC, and was a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist in Northern Ireland before being appointed to the chair of obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Manchester in 1974. Whitfield's research interests were in anaemia during pregnancy, fetal electrocardiography, and Rhesus incompatibility.
