Thomas was born on 11 September 1936 and gained his medical education at the University of Manchester. He held house appointments at Hope Hospital Salford, Salford Royal Infirmary and Park Hospital Davyhulme, gaining qualifications in anaesthetics and gynaecology. Thomas later settled in general practice in Marple, near Stockport.
