John Knowles Stanley, b 1944.

In 1996 Stanley was appointed to Britain's first chair of hand surgery at the University of Manchester. He had gained his medical and orthopaedic training in Liverpool (MB ChB 1968, MChOrth 1975) and held orthopaedic registrar appointments in Liverpool and the Wrightington Centre for Hip Surgery. Stanley was consultant to Ormskirk and District Hospital from 1979 to 1984 before being appointed consultant hand and orthopaedic surgeon in the Upper Limb Unit of Wrightington Hospital.
