John Blair Logan Taylor was born in Huddersfield on 13 June 1923, the son of John Binnie Taylor, a medical practitioner in Eccles. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School and the University of Manchester before being appointed house surgeon at MRI. Taylor was surgical registrar and orthopaedic registrar at Stockport and Buxton Hospital Group, and senior surgical registrar North Manchester Hospital Group. In 1967 he was appointed consultant surgeon Bury Area Health Authority.
