Spearing was born in Cork on 18 March 1850 and was educated in Ireland and Dublin. He was certifying surgeon and general practitioner in Shaw, Lancashire and later in Eccles. His eldest son, William Joseph Spearing (LRCS LRCPE), studied at Owens College and practised medicine, first in Shaw and later in Liverpool.
