Wheble gained his medical education in London and Oxford, qualifying in 1944. He was senior registrar for Oxford Regional Health Authority from 1952 to 1960, and in 1960 came to Manchester as consultant accident and orthopaedic surgeon to Tameside Health Authority. Wheble was a significant figure in orthopaedic mechanics, and sat on a number of committees. He was visiting research fellow at the University of Salford from 1976 and at the University of Manchester since 1982. Wheble was a senior fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association and a life fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.
