Stone was educated at Cambridge and Manchester Universities. He was RMO at Salford Royal Hospital before spending four years in the Merchant Navy. He returned to MRI as chief assistant from 1946 to 1951. He was appointed consultant physician at Manchester Northern Hospital in 1948, moving to West Manchester Group of Hospitals in 1951. He was a consultant physician at the West Manchester Hospitals Group. Stone was president of the Manchester Medico-Ethical Association in 1972/3.
