Sewell was born on 15 April 1879, the son of a Manchester merchant. He studied medicine at Owens College and qualified in 1903. Sewell continued his postgraduate studies in Europe, in particular Vienna and Heidelberg, specialising in surgery of the ear and throat. Sewell was appointed honorary assistant surgeon to the Manchester Ear Hospital in 1907, and in 1912 became honorary surgeon. He held consulting and honorary positions at the Royal Schools for the Deaf and Dumb in Old Trafford and the Manchester Warehousemen and Clerks' Orphan Schools. Sewell also held surgical appointments in the Aural Department of MRI, where he became consultant surgeon and was responsible for the development of endoscopy. He was the first surgeon in laryngology at Christie Hospital and Holt Radium Institute when the hospitals merged in 1932. Sewell was appointed clinical lecturer in diseases of the ear at the University of Manchester in 1923, where he assisted William Milligan. He was a member of Manchester Medical Society and Manchester Clinical and Pathological Societies and a member of the Otological Section of the Royal Society of Medicine. Sewell retired in 1939 and moved away from Manchester. He died on 15 March 1960.
