Stevens gained his medical education in Birmingham and was senior house surgeon at Warwick Hospital. He then came to Manchester as registrar in clinical haematology at MRI and was later promoted to senior registrar then consultant in haematology. Stevens was consultant haematologist at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. Stevens was a well respected and liked doctor at the hospital. He disappeared after arriving for work on 21 July 2003 and his body was found in the Lake District on 6 January 2004.
