Walsh qualified from the University of Manchester in 1926, having previously been a pharmacist. He was a GP in Altrincham, Cheshire. Walsh served in the RAMC during the second world war; he was in charge of the prisoner of war camps in Tunis before returning to England and establishing a hospital which was dug into the cliffs of Dover.
