Administrative / Biographical History

Wharton was educated at Cambridge University and Owens College Manchester. In 1904 he joined Manchester Royal Eye Hospital as a house surgeon. He was successively assistant honorary, honorary, and consulting surgeon, and finally vice-president of the Hospital. In 1923 he was made honorary ophthalmologist at MRI, where he was responsible for the clinical training of students, and was also clinical lecturer in the same subject at the University of Manchester. He was a founder member of the North of England Ophthalmological Society.
