Vernon-Parry was born in Stockport on 14 August 1926 and studied medicine at the University of Manchester. He held resident appointments at MRI, Withington Hospital and St Mary's Hospital Manchester. He was tutor in clinical obstetrics at the University of Manchester and St Mary's Hospital. Vernon-Parry married Kathleen Claire Hall (MB ChB Manch 1953), an anaesthetist. He left Manchester in 1962, gaining appointments first in Belfast and then in Sheffield. Vernon-Parry was senior consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology to Bassetlaw District Health Authority and was honorary clinical lecturer to the University of Sheffield. He was honorary secretary to the North of England Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society.
