Swinburn, known as Roy, was born in Manchester on 30 September 1930 and was educated at Manchester Grammar School and the University of Manchester. After qualifying, he held resident appointments at Hope Hospital, and at Huddersfield Hospital and Royal Alexandra Hospital, Rhyl. He was registrar in the department of neurology at MRI and later was in general practice in Cheadle Hulme, Cheshire. Swinburn died on 6 March 1989.
