Thomas, son of a farmer in Pendleton, was a pupil at Manchester Grammar School before being accepted as apprentice at MRI in 1768. It had been his father's wish that he qualify in medicine, however, in 1770 Thomas Seddon was reprimanded and discharged from MRI. He then pursued his own desire to enter holy orders, and went to Magdalen Hall, Oxford.
