Seed was born in Mellor, Derbyshire, on 7 October 1913. He studied at Manchester Grammar School and Downing College Cambridge before entering the Medical School at the University of Manchester in 1936. He held junior appointments in Manchester and Salford, and served as a captain in the RAMC from 1940 to 1946, during which time he was a prisoner of war in Singapore. From 1947 to 1951 Seed undertook specialist training in gynaecology at Manchester Hospitals. He was consultant gynaecologist in Canada from 1953 to 1965. In 1965 Seed returned to Manchester as a locum consultant gynaecologist for Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport. Seed was a member of the Canadian Gynaecological Fellowship Club and of the North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society.
