Smith studied medicine at University College and was physician's assistant and house surgeon at MRI. He was surgeon major in the 4th Regiment of the Royal Lancashire Militia before settling in Warrington as physician to the Dispensary and consulting surgeon to the Ladies' Charity. Smith was said to have 'died suddenly at a confinement', but it is not known when.
