Gibbon studied medicine at Victoria University Manchester. He was clinical assistant to Lancashire County Asylum, Prestwich, and assistant medical officer to Monsall Fever Hospital Manchester. He later became senior assistant medical officer at the Joint Counties Asylum in Carmarthen and later resident medical officer at Carmarthen Infirmary.
