Bamford was born in Stockport on 25 December 1927. After qualifying he was appointed house surgeon at the Hospital for Sick Children Great Ormond Street. He then became RMO at Duchess of York Hospital Manchester, and PMO (Child Health) for Bradford. Bamford was honorary consultant (developmental paediatrics) for Manchester Health Authority and Reader in Developmental Paediatrics. Bamford was a Member of the British Paediatric Association.
