Babbs was born in Rochdale on 2 November 1957 and gained his medical education at the University of Lonodn. Babbs was a member of Manchester Medical Society , the British Association for the Study of the Liver and the North of England Gastroenterology Society. He held resident appointments in London, Lancaster and Manchester before being appointed tutor in medicine at and later senior registrar MRI. Babbs was consultant physician to the Royal Oldham Hospital and then to Hope Hospital Salford.
