Bailey won many prizes while a student at Manchester and was an Associate of Owens College. He held house positions at Bolton Infirmary, Wirral Children's Hospital and Manchester South Hospital for Women and Children. He later became a lecturer in physiology Salford Technical Institute and District Medical Officer at Salford Royal Infirmary.
