Sir George Buckston Browne 1850-1945

Buckston Browne was the son of Henry Browne. He was educated at Owens College, and University College London, taking his MRCs in 1874. He was a private assistant to Sir Henry Thompson, before going into private practice. Browne was extremely successful in his career. In 1901 he delivered the Harveian lectures; he was knighted in 1932. In later life, he lived at Down House, the former home of Charles Darwin, which he filled with a collection of Darwinia. One of his patients was the novelist, George Meredith, who dedicated a novel to him in gratitude for his services. Browne was known as a generous benefactor to various medical charities and educational foundations.
