After holding various house positions, Ashworth was senior ophthalmic medical officer and senior RMO at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. He later became consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Portsmouth Group Hospitals, St James Mental Hospital, Portsmouth and Portsmouth City Education Authority. He was a fellow of Manchester Medical Society .
