Alexander Michael Boyd 1905-1973

Alexander Boyd was professor of surgery at the University of Manchester 1947-1970. He was a student at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London and graduated in 1929. In 1934, he joined the surgical professorial unit at St Bartholomew's and did research on the breast and thyroid. He later worked on the sympathetic nervous system and use of arteriography to investigate peripheral vascular disease. Boyd spent the War as a surgeon in the Middle East. He went to Manchester in 1947 and built up its staff and research facilities. Boyd was a very well-regarded lecturer and in research continued the study of vascular surgery begun by Telford. He was president of the International College of Angiology in 1965.
