Gifford was supernumary registrar in anaesthetics at MRI before being appointed chief assistant anaesthetist for Hope Hospital Salford. He was later consultant anaesthetist for Ashton, Hyde and Glossop Hospitals Group. He was a member of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain. He was president of the Section of Anaesthetics of Manchester Medical Society . Gifford later moved to Cornwall.
