Clough was an apprentice at MRI in the early 1820s and was surgeon to St Mary's Hospital Manchester from 1830 to 1837. He was also lecturer in anatomy at Marsden Street School of Medicine and demonstrator at the Royal School for Medicine. He later moved to Southport where he worked as a general practitioner and was surgeon to Southport Strangers' Charity and consulting surgeon to the Convalescent Hospital and Sea Bathing Infirmary. Clough died in Southport on 17 April 1865 shortly after retirement.
