Bramwell graduated MB ChB from the University of Manchester in 1930. His early career was spent in Manchester, where he took his MD in 1935. He held house appointments and was medical registrar at MRI and was chief medical assistant at the Department of Clinical investigations and Research of the University and MRI. In 1938, he moved to Norwich and entered general practice, later moving to Reading.
