Administrative / Biographical History

From an early period in his career, Clifford specialised in gynaecology. After qualifying he held positions at University College Hospital London and the Middlesex Hospital. From 1902 to 1904 Clifford held positions at St Mary's Hospital Manchester, and in 1908 joined the Northern Hospital for Women and Children as honorary assistant surgeon, later promoted to surgeon. From 1910 until 1912 Clifford was registrar to St Mary's Hospital Manchester. He was later appointed senior honorary assistant surgeon at St Mary's, honorary gynaecologist to Salford Royal Hospital and Buxton Cottage Hospital, and examiner to the Central Midwives' Board. Clifford lectured at the University of Manchester and was president of the North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society in 1922. By the time of his death in 1925 Clifford was a well known and respected gynaecologist.
