George Calvert, the son Charles Calvert (steward to the Duke of Norfolk), was a surgeon in Manchester. Calvert was educated at Manchester School before being indentured as an apprentice at MRI from 1811 until 1817. Despite dying at only 30, Calvert had distinguished himself in the publication of a number of articles, including one 'On diseases of the rectum' for which he attained the Jacksonian Prize in 1822.
