Clark was lecturer in psychiatry at the University of Dundee from 1977 until 1981 when he was appointed consultant psychiatrist at Cheadle Royal Hospital. Clark was a member of Manchester Medical Society , the Family Therapy Association and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
