Gostynski studied medicine in Berlin and was resident medical officer at Friedrichshain Hospital in Berlin. He came to England and studied at Manchester, changing his name to Gostyn between 1948 and 1950. Gostyn then held positions as assistant to the psychiatry departments at Manchester Royal Children's Hospital and Salford Royal Hospital before being appointed medical director for Lancashire County Council Child Guidance Clinic. Gostyn later went into general practice near Oldham and was a member of the British Psychoanalytical Society.
