Gowland studied medicine at Owens College Manchester where he was assistant demonstrator in anatomy and demonstrator of operative surgery. After qualifying, Gowland held hospital positions at Lincoln County Hospital, MRI, Shoreditch Infirmary and Chelsea Hospital for Women. Gowland was later appointed assistant medical superintendent to Isleworth Infirmary and was in general practice in Oldham. After becoming FRCS in 1912, Gowland was appointed demonstrator of anatomy to Professor Paterson at Liverpool. He held this post until 1914 when he was elected to the chair of anatomy at Otago, New Zealand, a post in which he gained a great reputation as a teacher. Gowland died in New Zealand on 2 September 1965, aged eighty six.
