Bowring was educated at king's College, London, qualifying LSA and MRCs in 1843. His first hospital appointments were in London. He was later appointed to SRh, and in 1855 became dispensary surgeon at MRI, where he remained until 1879. He was also medical officer to the Manchester Union Hospital, and a member of the Board of Guardians He served as a churchwarden at Manchester Cathedral. Bowring claimed to be first doctor to use anaesthetic at MRI.
