In 1845, Foster was practising in Yarrow, Lancashire. By 1850, he had moved to Aigburth, Liverpool. He married in 1855, aged forty four, when he was living in Manchester. By 1860 Foster was practising in Northwich, Cheshire, where he was medical officer for Northwich Union.
