Case registers of Marion Jean Smith

Scope and Content

This collection comprises an ms register of cases attended by Marion Jean Smith, whilst training in Plymouth, Devon (4 December 1955-31 May 1956) and then as a qualified midwife at the Mayday Hospital, Croydon (26 February 1957-19 October), detailing the name, age, address, pregnancy history and expected date of confinement of each patient, the date and hour of the midwife's arrival, the presentation of the child, the date and hour of the birth of the child, the sex of the child and whether born living or dead, whether the child was premature, the name of the doctor if called, if there were any complications during or after labour, the date of the midwife's last visit, the condition of the mother and child then, as well as any further remarks. Also includes a further ms case register, compiled by her during her time as a district midwife around the areas of Paddington and Marylebone, London (16 November 1958-22 August 1959), recording the same information as above, as well as whether antenatal care was provided by the midwife, doctor or a clinic, the weight of the child on birth, the name of the individual who delivered the child, whether the child was breastfed and if any drugs were administered during or after labour, such as analgesics.

Administrative / Biographical History

Marion Jean Paget, nee Smith (fl. 1940-1960) was a midwife who trained in Plymouth. She went on to practice at the Mayday Hospital (later known as Croydon University Hospital) and then around the area of Paddington and Maylebone, London.
