Scope and Content

Case book kept by Maureen McBain as a pupil midwife at St Mary's Hospital, Croydon (May - September 1953) recording deliveries attended by her and presented for the Central Midwives Board examination, which although anonymised, includes social details of the mother, her pregnancy and labour, and the delivery outcome.

Administrative / Biographical History

Maureen McBain was born in Scotland and moved to London at the beginning of the Second World War at the age of 16 to join the Civil Nursing Reserve. She received her nursing qualification in 1954, which included midwifery training.

Access Information

Restricted for 100 years: although case notes are anonymised, an index at the end of the volumes provides names and addresses of mothers.
