Scope and Content

Ms case book, containing the notes, graphs and charts of Pamela Yvonne Shepherd, pupil midwife at Moorgate General Hospital in Rotherham (20 September 1957-30 March 1958), recording the case number, religion, age, husband's occupation, as well as the medical and obstetrical history of each patient that she attended in childbirth, alongside the results of examinations carried out during the antenatal period, the date and hour of labour began, the date and hour that the membranes ruptured, the date and hour the cervix was fully dilated, the date and hour the child was born, the date and hour the placenta was expelled, the duration of labour, the results of examinations carried out during each stage of labour, the position and presentation of the child on birth and if there were any complications during labour, also including detailed descriptions of labour, puerperium and the condition of the mother and child in the days that followed the birth, as well as the postnatal care provided, together with an index of cases at the back of the volume. Also with five ms registers of cases that she attended as a qualified midwife in Rotherham and then Southampton, Hampshire (20 June 1958-16 April 1981), detailing the name, age and address of each patient, the date of booking, the expected date of delivery, the name of the doctor if booked or called in an emergency, the number of previous pregnancies and miscarriages, the date and hour of her arrival or the patient's admission to hospital, the date and hour of the birth, the birth weight of the child, the sex of the infant, whether the infant was born living or dead, the name of the individual who delivered the child, the date of her last visit or the discharge of the patient from hospital, the condition of the mother, the condition of the child, whether the child was breast fed, the drugs given and the date and time these drugs were administered, as well as any further remarks on the delivery.

Administrative / Biographical History

Pamela Yvonne Shepherd (fl. 1940-1990) trained as a midwife at the Moorgate General Hospital in Rotherham, Nottinghamshire. She then went on to practice around the area of Weston near Southampton, Hampshire.
