Case registers of Elsie Walkerdine

Scope and Content

This collection comprises 15 ms registers of cases attended by Elsie Walkerdine, midwife practicing in Deptford, London (19 May 1917-14 November 1959), recording the name, age, address and pregnancy history of each patient, the date of expected confinement, the date and hour of her arrival at the delivery, the presentation of the child on birth, the sex of the infant and whether the infant was born living or dead, whether the infant was premature, the name of the doctor if called, if there were any complications during or after labour, the date of her last visit, the condition of the mother and child on her last visit and any further remarks, such as how much weight the child had gained. The case register dating from 22 December 1938 to 26 July 1941, includes comments on air raids during the Second World War. Also with an ms booking register (January 1957-June 1958), listing the name and address of each patient that required her services as a domiciliary midwife, including details of the date her services were booked and the expected date of confinement, as well as whether the patient had be transferred to the hospital or to the care of another midwife.

Elsie Walkerdine (fl. 1900-1960) was a midwife who practiced in Deptford, London throughout the first half of the twentieth century.
