Certificate granting the Order of the British Empire to Brenda Mee

Scope and Content

Printed certificate granting the dignity of an ordinary officer of the civil division of the order of the British Empire to Brenda Dorothy Mee (3 June 1978), signed by Queen Elizabeth II.

Administrative / Biographical History

Brenda Dorothy Mee (1926-1979) was Assistant Secretary to Miss Audrey Wood in 1968 and then General Secretary of the Royal College of Midwives from 1970-1979. Before this she has been superintendent midwife at Kingston Hospital. She also served for a time as the Honorary Secretary of the Joint Committee of Professional Nursing and Midwifery Associations. Her contribution to the midwifery profession was recognised when she was awarded an OBE in 1978. Tragically, following the RCM Annual General Meeting held in Glasgow in 1979, Miss Mee went on a camping holiday with her secretary and friend Hazel Allen in north Wales, where they both fell to their deaths whilst walking near the top of Snowdon.
