Scope and Content

This collection comprises an ms case book, containing notes and temperature charts, completed by Gladys Caroline Mouncey, pupil midwife at Western General Hospital in Edinburgh (14 August-12 October 1953), recording the name, address and pregnancy history of each patient, the antenatal care they received, any abnormal conditions observed and the results of examinations carried out during the pregnancy, the date and hour of their attendance at hospital or the midwife's arrival, the presentation of the child, the duration of each stage of labour, the date and hour of the birth of the child, the sex of the child, if there were any complications during or after labour, the date of discharge from hospital or the midwives last visit, the condition of the mother and child, as well as a further remarks and summary of the case. Also with 11 ms registers of cases, relating to the district births and patients discharged from hospital attended by Miss Mouncey as a qualified midwife in Brentwood, Essex (25 April 1959-19 December 1973), also accompanied by four ms midwives drugs books (22 February 1954-29 January 1976), detailing the obtaining supplies and administration of drugs that she oversaw.

Administrative / Biographical History

Gladys Caroline Mouncey (later known as Nourse) was a midwife who trained at the Weston General Hospital in Edinburgh, before going on to practice in Brentwood, Essex during the latter part of the twentieth century.
